Founder of Dad Bod Abroad

Hi, I’m Nate — traveler, eater, photo subject, and proud owner of a classic dad bod.

Dad Bod Abroad started with a simple question I asked my partner while we were adventuring overseas:
“Why are all the travel photos just of you?”
Now, granted, most of those pictures were for her amazing mermaid business, but still… wouldn’t someone out there want to see me too?

Thus, Dad Bod Abroad was born — part travel diary, part food journal, and part love letter to life after the kid goes to college. This is a space to celebrate good eats, great destinations, and not taking yourself too seriously along the way.

Why “Dad Bod”?

Because this is me, as I am. No six-pack abs, no filters — just a guy soaking in the world, one delicious meal and funny photo at a time. I’m not trying to go viral. I’m just trying to live a little louder, eat a little better, and document the ride with humor, heart, and a little belly.

What You’ll Find Here

  • Global Adventures: From hidden street food gems to iconic landmarks, follow along as I travel the world (especially during winter).
  • Food First: If it’s wrapped in dough, grilled on a stick, or dipped in sauce — I’m eating it. But no fish sauce (Sorry Sandy!)
  • Dad Bod Moments: Expect fun, lighthearted photos of me living my best life.
  • Portland & the PNW: Summer is for staying put. I’ve lived in Portland for over 30 years, and I love sharing thoughtful, insider guides to this beautiful region. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or just want to eat like a local, I’ve got you covered.

A New Chapter

With my son heading off to college, this is my time to explore, rediscover, and redefine what joy and curiosity look like in this next season of life. Dad Bod Abroad isn’t just about travel — it’s about embracing who you are, wherever you are, finding the fun in the unfamiliar, and rediscovering joy on my own terms.

But this isn’t just a solo mission. I’m also working on planning group travel experiences with the growing Dad Bod Abroad community — curated trips that combine great eats, local culture, and a laid-back vibe. Think of it as a way for like-minded folks (with or without dad bods) to travel together, connect, and have a damn good time.

Whether you’re following along for inspiration or looking to join in on an adventure, you’re welcome here.

Before I started showing off my dad bod around the world, I packed in a whole lot of life
— and a lot of air miles.

I’ve traveled to 40+ countries (and counting), but a few have truly stolen my heart: France, New Zealand, Nepal, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal. Whether it’s paragliding in the Himalayas or sipping port in Portugal, I’ve always been drawn to places with great stories, kind people, and unforgettable food. You’ll get to read about some of these places in this blog.

I’ve worn a lot of hats over the years:

  • Cub Master & Assistant Scout Master, guiding my son and others through the wilderness — and more than a few campfire meals.
  • Serial Entrepreneur, with ventures ranging from finance to real estate — including co-founding Tombstone Brewing, Arizona’s third-ever brewery.
  • Real Estate Developer & Remodeler, with a passion for transforming spaces into something beautiful and functional.
  • Seasoned Cook, comfortable whipping up meals for 150+ hungry people without breaking a sweat (or burning the brisket).

I learned early on that people do business with people they like, so I took a shot at comedy and studied at Second City in Chicago — now I’m the joke. But hey, at least I’m laughing.

In short, I’ve built businesses, remodeled homes, led scouts, performed on national stages, and traveled the world — but now, I’m embracing a new chapter in life.

Thanks for stopping by. Let’s go see the world — snacks in hand.

– Nate
